Take a trip back to the Middle Ages, to a time when enemies could not breach the fortress gates. The Gothic Hartenštejn Castle is located in the town of Bochov, which was of great importance in the Middle Ages because it lay on the trade route between Prague and the town of Loket. The name of the castle, founded in the second half of the 15th century by Henry II of Plavno, could be translated as “hard castle.” However, the original structure was destroyed by George of Poděbrady, who fell out with Henry II and nearly razed the castle to the ground. The castle then passed through several owners until it was permanently abandoned in the early 17th century and converted into a quarry.
The castle boasts a sophisticated artillery defense system with battery towers, which fans of fortifications will surely appreciate. Others may become fascinated by this topic after reading the informational signs located on site. Noteworthy features include the castle’s square floor plan, battery defense towers equipped with embrasures, and vaulted basements.
To this day, one of the towers, measuring 15 meters, as well as the cellars, bastions, and a stone well, can be seen in relatively good condition. Don’t forget to climb up to the tower and, if visibility is good, enjoy the view of the Ore Mountains and the Doupov Mountains.
