The Božídary Peat Bog is a fascinating protected area in the Ore Mountains that represents a unique natural environment and ecosystem. It is characterized by its rich plant and animal communities, which are adapted to the wet and cool conditions of peat bogs.
Geologically, the peat bog is located in the Ore Mountains and covers an area of 930 hectares. One of the dominant features of the landscape is Mount Špičák, which rises to a height of 1,115 meters and consists of a basalt hill dating from the Mesozoic and younger Tertiary periods. Peat here forms from plant communities that do not require mineral nutrients and grow in water-saturated environments with limited air access. The result is a unique ecosystem that supports the growth of rare and endangered plant and animal species.
The history of the Boží Dar peat bog is linked to peat extraction, which was discovered in the 18th century and served as fuel for local residents. Peat extraction provided a significant economic boost to the region, particularly after the end of tin and silver mining in the Boží Dar area. Today, however, the peat bog is protected, and peat extraction is prohibited to preserve it for future generations.
Visitors can explore the Boží Dar peat bog via a 3.2-kilometer-long nature trail featuring 12 stops with informational signs. The trail is accessible to wheelchair users and parents with strollers, allowing a wide range of visitors to explore this unique natural feature.
