The Svatošské Rocks are a geomorphologically unique granite rock formation that reaches heights of up to 50 meters in places. The area is also home to rare endangered plant species, which is why it is protected as a heritage site. The granite city of the Svatošské Rocks was formed by the Ohře River; you’ll find them near Loket Castle, a major tourist destination. Initially, tall granite walls were formed here, but over time, they were eroded by environmental factors such as wind, frost, and rain into the most diverse shapes, which today amaze visitors. The Svatošské Skály are also suitable for rock climbing.
The Svatošské Rocks have attracted curious spa tourists since ancient times; visitors have included Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Theodor Körner, and Sigmund Freud. A story related to this place even appeared in the Brothers Grimm’s collection of fairy tales. Today, the Svatošské Rocks are an important protected natural monument known as the Jan Svatoš National Natural Monument.
The valley of rock formations is accessible on foot, by bike, or along the Ohře River. You can reach the site via hiking trails from Loket Castle. A 10-kilometer nature trail will guide you between Doubí and the Svatošské Rocks; at 12 stops, you’ll learn interesting facts about geology, archaeology, history, and botany. By bike, you’ll reach the rock town on Cycle Route No. 204, which runs from Karlovy Vary to Loket.
